Order Collembola

Small, usually less than 0.24 inch (6 mm). Six of fewer abdominal segments. Collophore (projecting ventrally from the first abdominal segment) and furcula (on the fourth abdominal segment) and retinaculum. The furcula and retinaculum are used to sping the springtail.

Springtails are omnivorous and live in moist conditions.

Greek: kólla = glue, émbolos = peg (in reference to the collophore).
